The childhood obesity epidemic continues to grow at an alarming rate. Currently in the United States, approximately one in every five children is overweight or obese. This is a disturbing number because overweight children are at a high risk or becoming overweight adults, which it turn will place them at risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, it makes them more likely to have low self-esteem, increased stress and sadness.

There are a number of reasons why children become overweight or obese, including lack of physical activity, genetic factors, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination. Children with brothers/sisters or parents that are overweight may be at a higher risk of becoming overweight themselves mainly because of shared family eating and activity behaviors.
