McKenzie Medical Center (MMC) was recently named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). This will allow residents in and around Carroll County increased access to critical diabetes education services.

Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. It is provided by diabetes educators.

MMC’s Diabetes Team consists of Dr. Bryant, Alice Chapman a registered/licensed Dietitian; Cindy Argo, CFNP who is a certified Diabetes Educator, and Kim Tharpe, FNP-C.

MMC’s Dietitian Alice Chapman commented, “Finally, people with diabetes in McKenzie and the surrounding area have cutting edge information available to aid them in management of their diabetes in preventing long term complications and chronic conditions that are many times associated with the disease. A team of professionals right here “at home” ready to help you.”

The last Thursday of each month MMC hosts a Diabetes Class from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. This class explores the psychological effects of diabetes, chronic complications, medication, skincare and effects of carbohydrate, protein and fat on blood glucose. Attendees must register for the class at MMC. Written materials and lunch will be provided. Attendees should bring their blood glucose meter to class. To attend the class it is necessary to receive a Provider’s referral for insurance to pay. Any Provider in the area may refer patients for Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME).

“Trends show that diabetes education is moving out of the hospital and into the community, so AADE’s accreditation program was created, in part, to encourage diabetes education where the patient is seeking care,” said Leslie E. Kolb, RN, BSN, MBA, Program Director, Diabetes Education Accreditation Program, “MMC’s Diabetes Program is exactly the type of program we envisioned when we set up our accreditation program in 2009.”
